Keith McLean has a B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. from Aberdeen University, UK. Following work in the oil industry and research in Scotland and New Zealand he joined CSIRO in 1989.
In 1996 he joined the Biomaterials group working on a VisionCRC Project developing materials for ophthalmic applications. This team developed a polymer, surface and surgical methods for an implantable contact lens and won the 2004 Royal Societies of Australia Eureka Award for Interdisciplinary Research and the 2009 CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement.
Keith was Research Director for Biomedical Materials from 2006 to 2014, leading a multi-disciplinary team of scientists developing materials and devices for health applications. He became Director of CSIRO Manufacturing in 2014, leading more than 400 scientists working in chemical, biomedical and advanced manufacturing.
Keith is a Board Member of CRC for Polymers, Biomedical Research Victoria and VESKI; sits on the Leadership Group of the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council and is Secretary of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering amongst others. McLean is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University.
